Last weekend, our SANTI Scholars spent their time underwater, taking part in scientific research at Kamionka Piast – the most fascinating dive site in Opole.
From 8–10 August 2025, this unique reservoir became a meeting point for passion for diving, science, and social mission.
Under the expert guidance of the Scientific Underwater Research Foundation, the Scholars took part in professional scientific research for the first time, putting into practice the skills they had gained during the “Ecological Diver” training, completed at the end of July. Their work included underwater landscape inventory, macrophyte vegetation studies, and analysis of the impact of tourism-related anthropopressure on the reservoir’s condition.
Kamionka Piast is a former marl quarry covering 24.6 hectares, with a maximum depth of 15 metres and average visibility of 4–8 metres. Beneath the surface lies a vibrant ecosystem – stoneworts, pondweeds, pike, catfish, and eels. The bottom is diverse, with submerged trees, bushes, marl walls, platforms, and even… a mannequin and a sunken Maluch car. It is not only a fantastic spot for recreational diving but also an excellent training ground for underwater research.
For our Scholars, this was a valuable lesson in fieldwork, combining theoretical knowledge with practical application, and discovering the secrets of local water bodies.
The research was organised by the Scientific Diving Club “Hydronautic” at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, in cooperation with the Scientific Underwater Research Foundation, with the support of volunteers and our SANTI Scholars.
We are extremely grateful for this opportunity and this is just the beginning.
