SANTI Proudly Supports the Hańcza Ghost Net Removal Initiative

Protecting the environment requires responsibility, collaboration, expertise, and meaningful action. That is why SANTI is proud to support a unique conservation initiative taking place at Lake Hańcza, the deepest lake in Poland. Between 10-12 July 2026, a team of professional divers will undertake a complex underwater operation to recover an abandoned fishing net from the lakebed- removing a serious threat to this unique freshwater ecosystem.

Held under the motto “Inspire. Protect. Restore.”, the project forms part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the Suwałki Landscape Park. It also raises awareness of the growing problem of ghost nets-abandoned fishing gear that continues to trap fish and other aquatic life long after it has been discarded.

Lake Hańcza is one of Poland’s most valuable natural treasures and one of the country’s premier diving destinations. Hidden at significant depth, however, lies an old fishing net that has remained on the lakebed for years. Recovering it requires highly trained technical divers, specialized equipment, and meticulous planning.

The operation is organized by the Scientific Underwater Research Foundation (Fundacja Naukowe Badania Podwodne). Weeks of preparation have included surveying the site, assessing the condition of the net, and developing a safe recovery plan. Due to the depth and weight of the net, the team will use specialized underwater lifting bags to safely bring it to the surface.

The project is the result of close cooperation between non-governmental organizations, public institutions, and business partners. Alongside the Scientific Underwater Research Foundation, the initiative is supported by the Code for Green Foundation, the Wild Poland Foundation (Fundacja Dzika Polska), and the “Kraina Hańczy” Association of Friends of the Suwałki Landscape Park. The event is held under the Honorary Patronage of the Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection in Białystok.

As a partner of this initiative, SANTI believes that responsible business can make a tangible contribution to environmental protection. Supporting this project reflects not only our commitment to a remarkable conservation effort, but also our dedication to raising awareness about protecting freshwater ecosystems and preserving our natural heritage for future generations.

We would like to thank all organizers, divers, volunteers, and partners whose expertise and commitment make this important project possible. Together, we demonstrate that through collaboration, innovation, and determination, we can protect the underwater world where it needs us most.
