Inventory of the Morskie Oko lakebed
Inventory of the Morskie Oko lakebed

As part of the inventory of the Morskie Oko lakebed (mountain lake in Tatry National Park), the Underwater Scientific Research Foundation (FNBP) conducted research including:

  • Inventory and monitoring of underwater plants and ichthyofauna,
  • Inventory and monitoring of unauthorized, trampled paths beyond the legal trail around the lake’s shoreline,
  • During the research, divers paid attention to garbage on the lakebed and attempted to remove it from the water.

The aim of the research is to assess the impact of tourism on the lake. Additionally, photogrammetry of the wreck of the “Syrenka” boat was performed. The wreck was discovered in 2015 by TOPR rescuers and dates back to the time when tourist cruises operated on Morskie Oko.

Santi has supported the Foundation’s activities for many years, and the Santi team personally participated in the research.

“The research was conducted after obtaining the necessary permits by staff from the Department of Socio-Economic Geography (UWM in Olsztyn), with organizational and technical support from FNBP. It focused on hydromacrophytes (submerged vegetation) and the assessment of tourism-related anthropogenic pressure on Morskie Oko. Observations were carried out both underwater and on the surface by volunteers, with substantial technical support from several companies. This collaboration fits perfectly into the concepts of ‘citizen science’ and ‘underwater citizen monitoring.’ For the first time in Poland, on such a large scale, FNBP successfully coordinated this type of underwater research. The obtained results will be published and shared with TPN (Tatry National Park) staff.”
